Meditation Basics

Below are the meditation basics. They are the ABCs of meditation. Although we refer to them as the meditation basics, they should never be disregarded or viewed as non-essential even after you have been meditating for some time. The meditation basics are very important when it comes to meditation. View them as the secrets of how to live a better life. If you have been meditating for some time and are having difficulty meditating, always take a look at whether you are valuing the meditation basics in your spiritual life. Whether you have been meditating for several years or if you are an absolute beginner trying to learn how to meditate, you should always be following the meditation basics. In fact, as a beginner, you should try not to even think about meditation, try only to concern yourself with the act of following the meditation basics.

As a beginner, if you value and follow the meditation basics you will begin to understand, with ease, the answer to "what is meditation".

Meditate Daily

First and foremost of the meditation basics is that you need to practice meditation at least once a day. To make faster progress with meditation, you can try meditating two or three times every day. You can meditate in the morning before you start your day, at noon during your lunch break, and at night before you go to sleep. Your lunchtime meditation can be for only 5 or 10 minutes, whereas your morning and evening meditations can be longer. Meditation is a lifelong journey. Whether you’re a beginner or have been meditating for a number of years, you always have to feed your soul at least once a day. Some days you may not feel very hungry, but you still need to eat.

Morning Meditation Is Best

The very best time to meditate is between 3 and 4 o’clock in the morning. However, it is important to get a proper amount of sleep every night so, for most people, the best time to meditate is before 6:30am every morning. Morning meditation will have a positive influence on your whole day. Regardless of what time you’re able to get out of bed every day, you should always start your day in a positive way with a morning meditation. The next best time for daily meditation is in the evening. If you’re not able to meditate before 6:30am, you should meditate in the evening.

Set a Fixed Time and Be Punctual

It’s very important to have a fixed time for your daily meditation and understand that this fixed time is non-negotiable. Regular practice at a regular time is absolutely essential in order to make progress with meditation. Think of the act of sitting down at your meditation time as showing up for work. If you don’t show up for work you will not get paid. When you value something, you take it very seriously. You know that you need to show up for work on time every day because you know that if you didn't your life would suffer. You need to have that same kind feeling about meditation if you wish to make progress with it. You need to take your daily meditation practice very seriously.

In addition, your fixed time should be a time when nobody is going to disturb you and you will not be required to attend to any outside matters. For many people, it is best to meditate first thing in the morning, before starting their day.

Designate a Meditation Area

Set aside a quiet place in your home or a corner of your room that you can keep very clean and sanctified. This is a special place that should be sacred and used only for meditation. You should do your best to prepare it in such a way that you find it very inspiring to sit at every day.

Use Candles, Incense and Flowers

It is good to place a candle and flowers in front of you and burn some incense during your meditation. The candle flame should be approximately eye level. These items are a source of inspiration and give you a feeling of purity. They help to increase your aspiration. Aspiration comes from inspiration. You can also keep in front of you a picture of a beloved spiritual figure such as the Christ or some other spiritual Master. You may wish to have stereo nearby so that you can play meditation music. The inspiring and meditative feeling you get from any one of these items and other meditation supplies may be just enough to help you to feel calmer and enter into a more meditative state.

Meditate Alone

For a husband and wife with the same spiritual Master it is okay to meditate together, otherwise, for your daily meditation at your regular meditation time, it is best to meditate alone. It is good to meditate with a group of people in a group meditation at least once a week, but for your regular daily meditation at your fixed meditation time you should meditate privately.

Maintain a Proper Meditation Posture

A proper meditation posture is important. During your meditation, you should be sitting up and keeping your back straight while keeping your whole body relaxed and comfortable.

Breathe Properly

Proper breathing is very important for mediation. You may find that your breathing slows down or even stops for a moment when you relax or concentrate on something. During your meditation, you should breathe in and out slowly and quietly. Some simple meditation exercises guide you to breathe in and out slowly while concentrating on your breath.

Cleanliness Helps

Cleanliness helps to purify your consciousness. You should take a shower before your meditation or, if it is not possible to take a shower, you should wash your face with cold water. If you can make your shower somewhat cool, that is good, but it doesn’t need to be so cool that it is uncomfortable. It is also good to wear clean clothes.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

You should wear clean, loose clothing. You may wish to have some loose fitting clothes that you wear specifically for meditation. These clothes will begin to develop a good vibration (as will your meditation area). Also, if you have clothes that you use only for meditation, you may not have to go searching for clothes if you are concerned that what you are wearing is too tight.

Not After a Large Meal

It can be difficult to meditate after a large meal. The weight of your meal will weigh you down and the heaviness will make it difficult for you to have a good meditation. About one and a half to two hours, after a large meal, should pass before your meditation. However, hunger can also be a disturbance to meditation so, if you’re very hungry, you can drink a small amount of juice or milk.
