Meditation PostureA proper meditation posture is important for meditation. For a proper meditation posture, the whole back must be kept straight and the body should be relaxed. Your body should not be stiff. The best meditation posture is to site cross-legged on the floor with a straight back, either on a meditation cushion or whatever you feel comfortable with. Meditation cushions are specifically designed for this purpose and can help you to feel comfortable so that you can focus. You should not feel uncomfortable while you are trying to meditate. If it is not possible for you to sit cross-legged on the floor you can certainly sit on a chair. The Lotus PositionThe main advantage of the lotus position for a meditation posture is that it is very good for keeping the spine erect. However, the lotus position is not comfortable for many people and this posture not necessary for meditation. What is important is that your back is straight and your body is relaxed and comfortable. If you find it most comfortable to sit in a chair then that is perfectly fine. You can place your hands on your laps and keep your feet flat on the floor. Lying Down During MeditationWhichever meditation posture you choose, you should be sitting up and keeping your back straight. You should not lie down while trying to meditate. This is generally only a good way to fall asleep or enter into a doze. In addition, if you lie down while meditating, your breathing will not be as proper and satisfactory compared to a sitting position. Hatha Yoga PosturesSome people try some Hatha Yoga postures and exercises before meditation. You can try Hatha Yoga postures if you wish; they may help you to ease some tension and restlessness, however, they are not necessary for meditation. Many people can sit and make their mind calm and quiet without doing any Hatha Yoga postures or exercises. |
